(WSB TV) New FBI crime statistics show violent crime increased in Atlanta last year
and violent crimes and murders went up in most of the metro counties in 2007.
The FBI says nationwide violent crime dipped slightly
Atlanta's murders jumped from 110 in 2006 up to 129 in 2007, that was the highest number since 2003 when there were 149 murders.
Aggravated assault cases in Atlanta are also steadily increasing.
There were 2,861 in 2005, 2959 in 2006, and 3,577 in 2007 according to the FBI's crime figures.
This equates to 20.8% increase!
One major crime area that shows a stead decrease is rape. The city recorded 148 forcible rapes in 2007, that is compared with 171 in 2006, 223 in 2005 and 267 in 2004.
Lesser crimes were also on the increase last year, burglaries, larcenies and auto thefts
were up last year.
Overall property crimes went from 32,231 in 2006 to 36, 232 in 2007.
This equates to a 12.5% increase in Overall Property Crimes.
